One day in the end of April I thought of a friend and went for an evening walk in a place where I had walked with her and I fell in love with some beautiful old oak trees. From that moment on I got more and more aware of all the oak trees everywhere around. Then I heard that in an old dialect form the city Stockholm was called “eken”(oak) so there is a special relationship to oak trees here.
Following my curiosity I did some research and found out about twelve famous old oaks in Stockholm…I took my bike and my Leica polaroid camera and visited all this trees in the beginning of May. They were still bare and at most of them there is no information about their history or names to be found. You see some impressions on the pictures above. I started off with the oldest one -he stands beside the motorway on Kristineberg and there is no sign there telling you about this 800 year old. There are Kings oaks -for example also in the industrial surroundings at Värtaverket- and oaks related to scientist (Lyell) or poets (Bellmann), oaks on Djurgården or a young one inside the court of the Stadshuset. I got to see a lot of new places and angles following the informations about this impressive giants even out to Ekerö and Gällstaö.
Now some months later when passing one or the other covered with lush green leafs I feel like meeting some old and special friends.
